A heaven for hikers: recharging your batteries in the Olympiaregion Seefeld-Leutasch

Whether you’re planning a pleasant family hike through Alpine pastures, or you just want to relax and enjoy a romantic stroll, or you’re aspiring to scale the peaks, everyone can find their own personal way of regaining their vitality along the 650 kilometres of hiking and walking trails in the Olympiaregion Seefeld-Leutasch.

The Olympiaregion’s unique location alone makes it a Mecca for hiking enthusiasts. Nestling among the mountains of the Wetterstein range, the Alpenpark Karwendel nature reserve and the Wildmoos landscape conservation area, the south-facing high plateau is the ideal “base camp” for mountain enthusiasts or for those who are aspiring to become one. Over 650 kilometres of signposted walking and hiking trails covering all ranges of difficulty, and more than 60 Alpine huts and lodges offering food and drink, form the “hardware” for an unforgettable true taste of nature. The range of hikes on offer is huge encompassing family walks in the Gaistal Valley’s “Pasture Paradise”, the new, spectacular Leutasch Spirit Gorge, the Wildmoos landscape conservation area, stunning summit climbs, for example up to the Hohe Munde or the Seefelder Spitze or the Reither Spitze and multiday hikes in the Alpenpark Karwendel. Via ferratas and rock climbing routes allow Alpine enthusiasts to experience the mountains in a different way. Those who place importance on safety and who want to increase their knowledge during hikes can place themselves in the experienced hands of the local mountain guides and hiking instructors.

Long-distance hiking trails: Eagle Walk, Via Alpina and the European E4 hiking route. It is no surprise that the majestic mountain ranges and the many other highlights the region has to offer make for desirable stops along several well-known long-distance and international hiking trails - the Eagle Walk, the new hiking route through the Tyrol, connects some of the most scenic areas and best walking erritories. Some of the route’s many stages are to be found in the Olympiaregion with a few in the Karwendel mountain range and one, the 16th stage, in Leutasch. Both the Via Alpina and the Alpine variation of the well-known European E4 long distance hiking trail, pass through the Olympiaregion.

Themed trails, themed hikes and many other event highlights. It is not only the local mountain guides and hiking instructors who offer interesting guided walks covering all levels of difficulty. The walks organised by the Olympiaregion Seefeld will appeal to all those who enjoy easy going, relaxing walks whilst learning about the natural environment and the local culture of each village.

Running and Nordic walking trails stretching over an astounding 266 kilometres, a unique location and lots of fresh mountain air – with these impressive features the Olympiaregion can now stand out in summer too as the number one destination for “Nordic” enthusiasts. Nordic walking is THE up and coming sport - it is an effective endurance activity which is easy on the joints and the only equipment you need is suitable footwear and poles. It’s easy to learn and appeals to both sports beginners and high-powered athletes alike. The Olympiaregion Seefeld already has the advantage of having a lot of experience and expertise in the field of Nordic sports and so, together with experts in the field of competitive sport, a centre has been created for all Nordic walking and running enthusiasts.

A comprehensive and well-signposted network of Nordic walking and running trails connecting the entire region was opened in the summer of 2008. 30 different routes covering an overall length of 266 kilometres, enable visitors to recharge their batteries and, at the same time, to enjoy the unique natural surroundings of the high plateau. With three levels of difficulty and a wide variety of different types of routes (interval, agility, regeneration, fell running), there’s something for everyone, from absolute beginners to professional athletes. Alongside trails with evocative names such as the “Fisherman’s Run”, the “Root Climb” or the “Leutasch Stream Trail”, there is also a wood chip running trail in Seefeld which offers ideal conditions for co-ordination and endurance training.
